When looking at all Eminem songs as a whole, you’ve got a diverse catalog of tracks covering the full spectrum of emotion, observation and rhyming capabilities. Whether he’s spitting fire at a sworn enemy or being reflective with a verse on his new found sobriety, Eminem is able capture the intensity of human experience through his song lyrics in a way that is unlike any mainstream artist on the scene today.
Sure, there’s plenty of ways to explain why Slim Shady is one of the greatest rappers and songwriters of all time, but more than anything else, perhaps it’s his honesty that is most disarming. When you listen to an Eminem song, you’re getting a vivid glimpse into another person’s mindset at specific time under specific circumstances. And, like any great artist, Eminem is able to paint that picture in precise detail while maintaining a flow and delivery that is always on target.
Do Common Themes Run Through All Eminem Songs?
Before giving you a rundown of all Eminem songs, I thought it might be worth considering what it is that makes an Eminem song so good? For instance, is there a common theme that pops up often in his music or a general thread that exists among Eminem songs? While not blatantly obvious, I’d say there are several themes that he returns to in his lyrics. Between the rough language and horror style theatrics, you can find a lot of statements about persevering despite all odds and making something of yourself where others might not see anything at all. To put it bluntly, nearly all Eminem songs can be tied to the theme of not giving up and moving forward regardless of life’s obstacles. Of course, Slim Shady also excels in the art of dark humor, so there’s plenty of maniacal wordplay and jesting throughout his lyrics as well.
Out of all Eminem songs I’ve heard recently, “Not Afraid” has to be one of his best pound for pound songs – at least in the last few years. In a sense, this is a song that marked the full circle evolution of an artist that wanted to use his recovery as a means to help others struggling with addiction. This is a song about a parent taking responsibility for their actions and their kids. All while keeping that never-say-die attitude very much alive. Not afraid, indeed.
